Republican Rep. [crscore]David Young[/crscore] of Iowa said Thursday he sent a letter to the House chief administrative officer Thursday requesting a hold on his paychecks until the House passes a budget or until the last day of the 114th Congress.

Young, who is a co-sponsor of the No Budget, No Pay Act, requested his pay be held from April 16 onward.

“In Iowa, we also know if you don’t do your job, you don’t get paid. I believe Congress should be held to the same basic standard,” he wrote in his weekly report. “By law, Congress is required to pass a budget by April 15th each year. As you may know, this requirement has often been ignored.”

As a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, Young said passing a balanced budget is a top priority.

“I am upholding the basic commonsense principle to ‘do what you say you mean – and mean what you say,’” he said. “I have cosponsored legislation requiring it – I have voted for a policy statement requiring it. Therefore I will hold myself to the standards of this legislation.”

Similar legislation has been introduced throughout the years by Republican lawmakers.

Rep. [crscore]Rod Blum[/crscore] of Iowa introduced a bill in February that would dock Congress’ pay until the national budget is balanced.
