Michael and Mary Kathryn Steel have had a harrowing 24 hours.

On Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m. someone broke into Michael Steel’s car that was parked at 9th and K Streets, smashed the window and stole the couple’s 4-month-old puppy, Magnolia. Steel is the former spokesman to ex-House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). He left the dog in the car for about 40 minutes to run some errands.

Some good news: Due to news reports, particularly a TV report by WUSA, the pooch was found and has been returned to her parents.

“We’re thrilled,” Steel told The Mirror by phone Wednesday evening.

“A high school student — a young girl — found her in her dog carrier yesterday in Petworth, saw her on the news today contacted us,” he explained.

The young woman found the puppy unharmed. She fed and cared for her.

The couple offered a $10,000 reward.

And yes, the student will receive the money.

Starting early Wednesday morning, the news was blanketed all over Washington. Every outlet from a local blog such as DCist to IJReview and WaPo covered the news of the missing doggie.

For a moment, the media gets some glory.

Press for the pup clearly paid off.
