EA Games announced Thursday that their popular Sims 4 game will no longer feature gender specific clothing or attributes.

Maxis, the branch of the company that creates the Sims, wrote on their blog,“For the first time, you’ll be able to customize your Sims without the gender boundaries previously set in place.”

The update launched Thursday  and the game will now allow players to customize their Sims characters’ gender, voice tone, clothing and more regardless of any male and female gender categories.

The company said that “The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it’s really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more.”

One player wrote in the comment section, “This is great! I’m so excited about this. I’m excited because it’s awesome to have my Sims wear whatever they want, but also for the transgendered community who will also really enjoy this update!”

Players have been calling for this update for a while, one player writing “Why can’t girls wear guys clothes in Sims? And why can’t guys wear girl clothes? I think it would be cool, I want my girl sim to be a tom boy but since there only girly clothes, I can’t. Same with my guy Sims.”

The customization update is considered huge progress for the LGBTQ movement.
