Did payola pay off for “Clinton University?”

Laureate International Universities, the for-profit education behemoth often sued for allegedly bilking students,  just made news for paying Bill Clinton $16.5 million of dollars for his stint as honorary chancellor.

Coincidentally or not, during Hillary Clinton’s stewardship the State Department reportedly gave $55 million in grants to groups tied to Laureate’s founder.

Now, in a little-noticed item New York Post gossip columnist Richard Johnson lays out some other possible benefits Laureate accrued when Clinton shilled for them from 2010-2014. Clinton was getting nearly $4 million a year, for what?” an industry source asked Johnson rhetorically. “It’s protection money. While every other for-profit school was getting bashed on Capitol Hill, Laureate got a pass.”

The Clinton connection also greased the wheels for Laureate overseas. The Clinton connection also greased the wheels for Laureate overseas. One competitor told Johnson he was shut out of Libya because only Laureate could get visas for Libyan students to study in the United States.

Additionally, other organizations linked to Laureate founder Douglas Becker have received at least  $150 million from the International Finance Corp, which is part of the World Bank.

Laureate’s flack declined to dispute Johnson’s revelations.
