On Friday, President Barack Obama designated the Stonewall National Monument as “the newest addition to America’s national parks system.”
In the video the White House released accompanying Friday’s announcement, Obama noted that “Stonewall will be the first national monument to tell the struggle for LGBT rights.”
“I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the richness, diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us, that we are stronger together, that out of many, we are one,” he continued.
The Stonewall Inn is one of New York City’s most historic gay bars.
In 1969, it gained national notoriety when patrons rioted following an unannounced police raid on the bar and others like it in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.
