Donald Trump’s rumored vice president pick clarified his previous comments on abortion, stating that he is actually a “pro-life Democrat.”
Retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn told Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin in an exclusive interview that he is a “pro-life Democrat” after saying Sunday that women have “sort of the right of choice” when it comes to abortion.
“This pro-choice issue is a legal issue that should be decided by the courts. I believe in law. If people want to change the law, they should vote so that we can appoint pro-life judges. I believe the law should be changed,” Flynn told Fox News.
His statement marks a change from his comments on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday that suggested Flynn supported abortion and that women should be able to choose whether to have one or not.
“I think it’s a — I think for women — and these are difficult issues, but I think women have to be able to choose what they — you know, sort of the right of choice, but I think that that’s a difficult legal decision that — and I think that women are so important in that decision-making process,” Flynn said Sunday, “they are the ones that have to make the decision, because they’re the ones that are going to decide to bring up that child or not.”
Various pro-life and pro-choice groups came out to oppose Flynn’s comments. The president of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that is against abortion, said that Flynn’s “pro-abortion position is unacceptable.” The executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund said that Trump does not care about women’s health and that whoever he picks as VP would have the same values.
Flynn said that the most important issue for him is national security.
“I’m more concerned that our country could collapse because we are not dealing with education issues, immigration issues,” Flynn told ABC’s “This Week.”
