The Daily Caller News Foundation caught up with former GOP presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson at the Republican Convention, who said in an exclusive interview he would not serve in a Trump Administration.
“I don’t want a position in the [Trump] Administration,” Carson told TheDCNF, when asked if he would accept the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services or being the Surgeon General that. “I would much rather work from the outside as an adviser, continuing to work on ways that we can save our country, but you don’t have to be a member of the [Trump] Administration to do that.”
“We’re [the United States], in very deep trouble,” if Trump loses the presidential election, Carson added. “I don’t even want to think about [a Hillary Clinton presidency], therefore I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
The retired neurosurgeon went on to tell TheDCNF that it was, “largely exaggerated” when it was reported that Trump wanted to change his mind about having offered the VP slot to Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Having advised Trump on the VP selection process, Carson admitted that the presumptive nominee was “very deliberate” in thinking about who should be his Veep and that “chemistry” was an important factor in the choice.
On the issue of Obamacare, Carson said that he wants, “healthcare back in the hands of the patient and the healthcare provider.” The former Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions told TheDCNF that he wants, “health empowerment accounts, which are like health savings accounts, with no bureaucrats.”
Carson also shared his thoughts on the Zika epidemic and how to confront it, saying in part, “I think Zika is incredibly important to deal with, the potential for disaster is very significant.” Carson emphasized that, “the costs [of fighting against the Zika virus] are enormous when you have a baby with microcephaly.”
