The celebrations at a Danish festival over the weekend were overshadowed by several cases of sexual assaults despite cooperation between organizers and the local asylum center.

Nine cases of rape and sexual assault were reported at the Langeland festival in Denmark. Three refugees who stayed in the area were charged with groping a women, and two other rape suspects were released.

The festival was in close contact with the asylum center where the boys stayed prior to the festival. Organizers said the asylum center promised to look after the boys, but later had no information about their whereabouts.

“We realized when we got in touch with the reception centre to ask them to pick up the boys, that they could not tell us how many boys were actually in the area,” festival organizer Allan K. Pedersen told public broadcaster DR. “They didn’t know. I think that is too laissez-faire an attitude to have.”

The director of the asylum center, Sisi Eibye, said they don’t have any authority to tell their tenants what to do.

“We have no sanctions, and all we can do is report it to the police if the boys are gone more than a day. We can not lock them up,” Eibye told DR. “The boys’ behavior is completely unacceptable, there’s no doubt about that. But it’s important for me to point out that their behavior far from represents the other boys at the center.”
