A pipe bomb exploded on the hood of a police SUV Wednesday in suburban Maryland, blowing out at least one window and sending shrapnel to a nearby house. No one was injured.

The police vehicle was parked outside of an officer’s house in Thurmont, Maryland, which is about an hour northwest of Baltimore and close to presidential retreat Camp David. At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, the officer heard an explosion and found the remains of a pipe bomb beside his police vehicle.

Thurmont, Maryland Police Chief Greg Eyler told CBS-Washington, D.C. affiliate WUSA-TV that it appears as if someone placed the pipe bomb on the hood of the vehicle. Most of the damage was to the hood, windshield and front windows, and shrapnel was also sent into a nearby house, according to CBS News.

WHAG-TV reported that the force of the explosion could have killed the officer had he been inside the car at the time of the blast.

“Right now it’s a preliminary investigation. We don’t have all the details that we need at this point in time to develop a suspect but we are working on it as we speak,” Elyer told reporters.

The bomb fragments have been sent to a lab and will be analyzed by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. No one is under arrest at this time and the motive remains unclear.

Investigators are not ruling anything out at this time because of recent incidents where police officers have been targeted.
