A man in Northeastern China found himself stuck in a windshield of a local bus, China Central Television (CCTV) reported Thursday.

Pictures of the incident, reveal a man sticking out of the shattered windshield of a local city bus, blood pouring out onto the ground below. Many initially interpreted the images as the result of a sudden stop and a failure to utilize the on-board seat belts, but that’s not what happened.

Police told CCTV that at around 8 a.m., on a bus in Suihua, Heilongjiang province, that a male passenger stood up and ran headlong into the windshield. The driver instinctively pulled to the side of the road.

It is believed that the momentum of the passenger, coupled with the sudden stop, resulted in the gruesome outcome.

The driver called 110 (China’s 911) and a rescue team came to break the man out. Rescue personnel, using shovels and hammers to break the windshield, got the man free, and rushed him to the hospital.

Although he lost a lot of blood, the man survived with only a few cuts and bruises.

The emergency room medical team charged with his care told CCTV that they could not get the man to stop screaming; however, they could not identify a reason. Medical professionals suspect that the man may be mentally ill.
