Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa is one GOP Senator whose support demographics aren’t falling in line with those of Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to a Thursday Quinnipiac poll.

Grassley appears to be able to break the mold of vulnerable Senators struggling to maintain their position in the wake of a national backlash against Trump.

Grassley leads Democratic challenger Patty Judge 51 to 42 percent. Grassley carried the lead with male voters at 57 percent, and carried a large portion of the women vote at 47 percent.

Grassley differed from Trump in several key demographics; among Republicans, the incumbent carried 93 percent, while earning 57 percent of Independents. Trump only earned 34 percent of Independents nationwide earlier this month.

Grassley’s support held constant between college educated and those without a college degree at 52 percent. Trump leads with those without a college degree drastically nationwide, but his support drops for those with at least a college education.

Also of interest is Grassley’s ability to maintain younger voters. Trump trails with younger voters by 5 points, according to the most recent LA Times Poll published Aug.4th. Grassley has a 51 percent lead with those under 34. The incumbent earned 60 percent of the vote for those under the age of 49.

“Iowans have known, liked and voted for Sen. Chuck Grassley for decades. That’s why he appears in strong position to avoid the kind of down-ballot bloodletting that may hurt some Republicans in other states who are not as well attuned to the views and values of their home base,” assistant poll director Peter A. Brown said in the accompanying statement.

“Sen. Grassley’s chances for reelection also are helped by the fact that Donald Trump is running better in Iowa against Hillary Clinton than Trump is in many other states.”

Trump’s numbers are higher in Iowa than they are nationwide, but the Republican nominee still trails Clinton 47 – 44, much lower than Grassley’s numbers.

Grassley holds almost $6 million on hand of the over $7 million he raised since he won reelection in 2010. Democratic challenger Patty Judge used to be the state’s lieutenant governor, as well as the state secretary of agriculture, and has only raised $7oo,000 in the race as of the end of July.

Normally, name recognition would strongly favor the long-time Republican Senator, but Judge made a name for herself in state politics, meaning Grassley’s advantage was undercut.

Judge is running against Grassley on his failure to confirm Judge Merritt Garland to the Supreme Court, as well as an expansion of social security and fighting for the environment.

Astoundingly, the former state secretary for agriculture hasn’t earned a single dollar in agriculture interest funding, despite the fact that Grassley voted down the latest iteration of the Farm Bill. In fact, the only environmental group to donate to Judge’s campaign has given a grand total of $10 dollars to date.

The survey took place from August 9 through the 16th, and consisted of 846 likely voters. The Iowa poll carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
