A man from Minneapolis, Minn. used money he received in an injury settlement to join the Islamic State and finance cars and weddings for his fellow radicals, according to federal officials.

Mohamed Amiin Ali Roble, 20, was injured in 2007 when the Missippi River bridge located on I-35W collapsed due to faulty design. Roble, along with 144 others, received compensation from the state of Minnesota, as well as the contractor and engineering company that built the bridge.

Roble did not receive his portion of the settlement ($91,654) until he turned 18 in 2014 because he was a minor at the time of the accident.

Roble was part of a group of several men from the Minneapolis area who joined ISIS and planned to travel to Syria and enter the so-called caliphate. The young would-be terrorist and his uncle, Abdi Nur, were the only ones in their group who managed to travel to Syria successfully, nine others were caught, convicted and await sentencing.

Both Roble and Nur have been charged in absentia for their terrorism-related activities, though Nur is believed to have been killed while fighting for the terrorist group.

After receiving his settlement, Roble traveled with his mother to China in October, 2014, allegedly for academic purposes. He then traveled to Istanbul, Turkey briefly in November, while making a second trip to Turkey a month later, this time never returning.

Checking account records from Roble’s second trip to Turkey show he became quite the spendthrift. After arriving in the Turkish border town of Gaziantep, a well-known ISIS recruiting hub, Roble spent more than $47,000. A co-defendant in the case told authorities that he passed out money “like candy” once he arrived in Syria, happily financing cars and weddings for his fellow terrorists.

Roble was last seen in photos carrying an ISIS flag and assault rifle, according to one of the other defendants in the case.
