Left-wing Swiss politician Lisa Bosia Mirra was arrested Thursday morning for trying to smuggle four underage African migrants into Switzerland.
Not only is 43-year-old Mirra a councilor in the canton of Ticino, but she also runs a refugee aid group called Firdaus, the Swiss paper 20 Minuten reports.
She was arrested along with another man who participated in the scheme. That 53-year-old Swiss man was driving behind her in a van, which contained four underage African migrants. Shortly after the two cars had crossed the border into Switzerland, police pulled them over at San Pietro di Stabio and arrested the two. They’ve since been charged with aiding and abetting an illegal entrance.
Shortly before trying to smuggle migrants, Mirra recently denounced the customs authority for turning away migrants from entry.
For a long time, Mirra has been dedicated to the cause of aiding migrants. She started a charity in late 2015 after hearing reports of the migrant crisis on the Serbian-Croatian border, where there were thousands of migrants lacking medical supplies and food.
“I am ashamed, I am ashamed, it is enough!” Mirra wrote on Facebook at the time.
She then managed to collect an incredible amount of donations and ship them by truck to the Serbian border region.
