Rivers of blood are flowing through the streets of Dhaka Tuesday, after countless animals were slaughtered in celebration of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha.
The festival is a commemoration of the time when the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham of the Bible) was commanded to sacrifice his son, before God provided an animal to take his place. Muslim families slaughter a goat, sheep or cow in celebration of the day, and share the meat with family and friends.

Vast volumes of blood from thousands of the slaughtered animals combined with torrential rains overwhelmed the poor drainage systems in Dhaka, a city in Bangladesh of 10 million, and turned the streets into blood rivers.

“I felt I was walking through a post-apocalyptic neighborhood,” a Dhaka-based artist disturbed at the sight of cheerful families wading through the flood told The Guardian. “To be honest, I was scared. It was an image of mass violence that shouldn’t ever be experienced.”
“It made me speechless,” he added.
