Three Algerian men were arrested for their alleged role in the gang rape of a woman in a public park near the Eiffel Tower, French police told the media Friday.

The alleged assailants lured the 18-year-old woman to the Champ-de-Mars garden near the iconic French monument after having met one of the alleged rapists on Facebook, according to an anonymous French official. All three of the woman’s alleged assailants are 17-year-olds from Algeria who were visiting Paris and about to head back to Germany, where they all live, just as police arrested them.

Authorities arrested the three young men in a hotel September 12. The rape took place the evening of September 10 into the early hours of Sept. 11.

The young woman was found to have been beaten and gagged by her rapists, but she managed to shout loudly enough that two Canadians on their morning jog came towards her, which prompted the thugs to run away. “Partially naked and in tears,” as well as “dazed,” is how witnesses described the victim to Le Parisien at the time she was found.

Police sent the alleged rapists to a Paris court that deals specifically with crimes committed by minors since all three are under the age of 18. Paris’ prosecutor’s office has confirmed that the three young men have been charged and are in police custody.

French law dictates that if someone is found guilty of rape, they tend to get 15 years behind bars; although since this case shows that the heinous crime was premeditated, this could ultimately land the three young men a 20 year prison sentence according to RTL.
