“Outkick the Coverage” founder and Fox Sports pundit Clay Travis hit back at LeBron James for saying that if his son is pulled over by the police, he is worried that he might not survive the encounter.
“And you see these videos that continue to come out, it’s a scary, it’s a scary ass situation. That if my son calls me and said he’s been pulled over, that I’m not that confident that things are gonna go well and my son is gonna return home and my son just started the sixth grade,” the Cleveland Cavaliers star told the media. Travis responded Tuesday morning on his “Outkick the Coverage” radio show. He said in part:
“That’s an unbelievable statement because it’s completely not supported by any kind of intelligent, rational thought,” Travis said. “I’m a stats guy, all right? I think that when feelings get involved most of the time the majority of us make really dumb decisions. ‘I’m not that confident that things are going to go well,’ LeBron James said and that his son might not come home if he gets pulled over.”
“And a lot of people are nodding right now. They’re saying, I agree with LeBron. That’s because they have no conception of what facts actually exist in this country,” he continued. “These are the statistics in 2016 directly in contravention to what LeBron James said. There have been 42 people, unarmed, shot and killed by police in this country, 42. Nineteen of them are white, 15 of them are black, five of them are Hispanic and three of them we don’t know the race of.”
“So more white people have been shot and killed while being unarmed by the police than black people,” Travis said. “And white and Hispanic and unknown represent around 68 percent of all the people who’ve been unarmed, shot and killed. In this same year, 35 people have been struck and killed by lightning.”
