Republican nominee Donald Trump came out swinging against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton Sunday night, claiming his lewd remarks in a recently-released video were “just words” while accusing former President Bill Clinton of being an actual rapist.

“If you look at Bill Clinton, mine are words and his was action,” he said just 15 minutes into the debate. “[There has] never [been] anyone in the history of politics in the nation that has been so abusive to women. You can say any way you want to say it, Bill Clinton was abusive to women. Hillary Clinton attacked the women viciously, four of them here tonight.”

Trump also raised the matter of Clinton’s defense work and a client she successfully defended whom she later admitted was almost certainly guilty.

“Her client she represented got him off and she is seen laughing, on two occasions, laughing at the girl who was raped,” Trump said. “Kathy Shelton is here with us tonight. Don’t tell me about words. I apologized for the words … when Hillary brings up a point like that and talks about words I said 11 years ago, I think it’s disgraceful and she should be ashamed of herself if you want to know the truth.”

Clinton responded by accusing Trump of dragging the debate into the mud. She quoted Michelle Obama, saying “When they go low, we go high.”
