Hurricane Nicole is about to slam into Bermuda and could turn towards the U.S. East Coast, according to data from NASA satellites.

NASA’s Terra Earth Observing System first detected signs of Nicole strengthening Tuesday, and the storm could potentially turn towards the U.S. The same non-tropical system storm system that pushed Hurricane Matthew away from the U.S. will pull Nicole northward, potentially leading to landfall.

Nicole’s sustained wind speed increased early Wednesday to 100 miles per hour with higher gusts, causing a hurricane watch and warning to be placed on Bermuda. Nicole could strengthen into a major Category 3 hurricane late Wednesday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Nicole follows just a week after Matthew, which was stronger than any hurricane in recent decades, including the 2004 Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Jeanne, as well as Hurricane David in 1979, according to the National Weather Service.

Prior to Matthew, the U.S. has been in a “hurricane drought,” when no hurricane had made landfall since Hurricane Wilma hit in October of 2005.

“That’s an unprecedented streak, going back to 1900—the longest drought before the current one was nearly 1,000 days shorter,” according to Time magazine.
