Refugees are desperately in need of American sports programs. At least, that’s what a federal officials intend to spend taxpayer money on.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (OOR) informed governors’ offices of its intent to provide sports programs, mental health counseling and job placement services for refugees during a conference call Thursday.
On the quarterly call on refugee issues, participants were told the sports programs are necessary to help them acclimate to American culture. The cost of the sports programs has not yet been disclosed.
The conference call was held in conjunction with the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and the Department of Homeland Security’s United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS),
According to one of the call’s participants, the focus remained largely on what benefits refugees will receive — not the vetting process prior to even entering the United States.
“We were eager for assurances that these refugees are being thoroughly vetted and steps are being taken to prevent another San Bernardino. Let’s just say that call did not make us feel better,” the participant told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “What we took from it was, ‘We might have no idea who these people are, but don’t worry, let’s talk about the sports programs we have for them.’ Unreal, but at this point, we expect nothing less.”
While President Barack Obama initially aimed to being 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country in 2016, he exceeded his goal, instead bringing in 12,587, with a large influx in numbers during August and September. The administration is laying the groundwork for another 110,000 refugees from around the world to be granted amnesty.
States are slated to be informed on the placements and number of refugees they can expect in mid-to-late November
Congressional Republicans have repeated expressed their concern over the vetting process, fearing the move will increase the country’s risk of being subjected to acts of terror.
