The Senate seat in Ohio was won by Republican incumbent Sen. Rob Portman.

Portman’s polls never dipped below 13 points in the final weeks of the 2016 election cycle. Democrats were full of vigor to knock off the incumbent senator, and nominated former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland to take him on.

Portman raised a gigantic campaign purse of $24,994,572, and Strickland could simply not keep up with his fundraising operation. The former governor raised under half of Portman received this election cycle, with campaign contributions totaling just $10,136,361.

Portman also had an incredibly organized and mobilized campaign, which became the envy of his fellow Republicans running this cycle. He was even able to develop and mobilize a group of 500 high school students. Stickland again could not keep

The Republican senator no doubt benefited from the fact that Republican nominee Donald Trump was leading in the polls up to Election Day. Trump held a 2.2 point lead over Clinton in the final Real Clear Politics poll before ballots were cast on Tuesday.
