A truck carrying 50,000 pounds of bananas overturned on the freeway in North Carolina, spilling bananas along the median and snarling traffic for several hours Monday morning.
Authorities say the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the guardrail around 4:00 A.M., local TV station WRAL reports. The driver was bruised, but not badly injured. He will face charges of careless and reckless driving.

The mangled truck and boxes of bananas were spread along the median and on the northbound lanes of I-85 near Hillsborough, N.C. Maintenance crews were able to clean up most of the debris by 6:45 A.M., CBS affiliate WNCN reports.
The crews also apparently spread sand on the freeway where the bananas spilled — to prevent slipping, obviously.
