GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions will focus on his plans to reduce gun crimes and his strong stance on illegal immigration in his opening remarks at the Senate Judiciary hearing Tuesday.

The Senate Judiciary hearing to confirm Sessions begins Tuesday morning. Sessions’ opening statement will underscore the most important items on the attorney general appointee’s list should he be confirmed by the Senate.

“If I am confirmed, we will systematically prosecute criminals who use guns in committing crimes,” Sessions plans to say to the committee, according to Politico Playbook. “As United States Attorney, my office was a national leader in gun prosecutions every year. … We will partner with state and local law enforcement to take down drug trafficking cartels and dismantle gangs. … We will prosecute those who repeatedly violate our borders.”

“It will be my priority to confront these crises vigorously, effectively, and immediately. … We must reestablish and strengthen the partnership between federal and local officers to enhance a common and unified effort to reverse the current rising crime trends,” Sessions will say before addressing the intense emotions between the police and members of the black community. “I deeply understand the history of civil rights and the horrendous impact that relentless and systemic discrimination and the denial of voting rights has had on our African-American brothers and sisters. I have witnessed it.”

Any effort to discuss gun crimes has a racial component. More gun crimes are committed by minority communities than white communities every year, meaning that some black activists fear Sessions’ focus on the issue will result in a focus on black crime. New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, NAACP President Cornell Brooks, and Rep. John Lewis are all set to testify against Sessions Tuesday during the hearing.
