The White House Correspondents’ Dinner used to be an annual roast of the President of the United States. But under the past 8 years of King Barry’s benevolent rule, the WHCD has been transformed into just another platform for POTUS to attack his enemies. Most notably, Obama used it to mock and ridicule then-private citizen Donald Trump, right to his face.
Have you noticed how that one turned out?
If there’s anything Democrats can’t stand, it’s the taste of their own medicine. But they’re found a chaser, and its name is Sam Bee. Dave Itzkoff, NYT:
Samantha Bee is not waiting to see how this year’s soiree unfolds or if those involved decide to hold it at all.
Instead, Ms. Bee… and her colleagues are planning a counter-event that will take place in Washington on April 29, the same night as the Correspondents’ Association dinner.
This alternative gala, which is being called “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner”… will be at the Willard Hotel.
And Bee gives us a sample of the sort of knee-slapping laffs the attendees can expect that night:
Addressing the Correspondents’ Association, she said: “I honestly can’t imagine what they’re thinking, but I really wish them well. I think that’s going to be very challenging. Does 3 Doors Down do comedy? I don’t know, maybe they do.”
Ha ha ha, get it? Because Three Doors Down played the inauguration, and they’re not as popular as they used to be. Unlike Ms. Bee, who is more popular than ever, probably.
I have no idea what Trump will do, because not even Trump knows what he’ll do until he’s already doing it. But I’ll be disappointed if he cancels the WHCD, as Bee and others seem to assume. His comic timing is one of the few things I like about him.
