Officials at a high school on Long Island have convinced a student club focused on women’s issues to stop selling pink, knitted “pussy power hats” on campus during school hours.

The club at Pierson Middle-High School in Sag Harbor began selling the neon-pink-yarn “pussy power hats” with perky cat-like ears last month in response to the Jan. 21 Women’s March on Washington, reports NBC New York.

The sale of the “pussy power hats” at the taxpayer-funded school only became a source of controversy after at least one parent objected.

The peeved parent, Janice D’Angelo, found about the on-campus, during-school sales of “pussy power hats” by way of Facebook.

“The hats represent a political notion, and it shouldn’t be brought into school,” D’Angelo, who has a 12-year-old daughter at the middle school, told NBC New York.

“During lunchtime, I don’t want my daughter subjected to a political issue at school.”

School officials convened with members of the high school women’s issues club and convinced them to stop selling the hats while school is in session.

The high school girls who had been selling the “pussy power hats” at school say they believe strongly in their cause.

“I wear this hat because I feel empowered,” high school student club member Allura Leggard told NBC New York. “I feel like an empowered woman.”

“It’s not disappointing because we’re fighting for what we believe in, and we won’t be stopped,” Sarah Mac, a second club member, added.

The pink “pussy power hats” were all the rage last month. The organizers of the Pussyhat Project said they hoped to make “a powerful visual statement” at the Women’s March on Washington by having a large number of women show up festooned in the hats. The ribald name of the hats is an obvious reference to Trump’s notorious “grab them by the pussy” statements.

“If everyone at the march wears a pink hat, the crowd will be a sea of pink, showing that we stand together, united,” a mission statement at the Pussyhat Project website explains. “Pink is considered a very female color representing caring, compassion, and love — all qualities that have been derided as weak but are actually STRONG. Wearing pink together is a powerful statement that we are unapologetically feminine and we unapologetically stand for women’s rights.”

Almost 225,000 people had indicated that they would march in the Women’s March on Washington.

The demonstration was originally billed as the “million women” march.
