Donald Trump said that prior to his firing, former FBI Director James Comey told him that he was not under investigation.
In an exclusive interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Trump said he had dinner and several phone calls with Comey wherein the former director told him he is not a part of the US-Russia collusion investigation.
“We had a very nice dinner, and at that time he told me, ‘you are not under investigation,” Trump said. “When you’re under investigation you’re given all sorts of documents everything…I knew I wasn’t under investigation.”
“During a phone call he said it and then during another phone call he said it,” Trump asserted.
“I asked him, ‘Am I under investigation?’ He said, ‘You are not under investigation.'”
Holt asked how it was possible that Trump is not under investigation when there is a confirmed investigation into possible Trump campaign connections to Russia.
“I know that I’m not under investigation — me, personally — I’m not talking about campaigns, I’m not talking about anything else. I’m not under investigation,” Trump responded.
