A New Mexico high school is in uproar over a final exam that allegedly used a racial slur for a question, according to Thursday reports.

A Roswell High School student took a screenshot of the final exam question, which reportedly read “why are niggers black?” reports KOB 4.

“When I first saw it you know, I was just taken aback like. You know, this isn’t right,” Justice Adler, a student at the school, said to KOB 4. “I’m not reading this right, and then I kept reading it over and over again and I just got so angry.”

The Public Education Department said that “no such question exists on the NM end of course exam.”  School district officials believe a student “altered and tampered with an end of course exam” and are currently questioning students, officials told KOB 4.

Local residents are also unhappy with the potential prank, saying it affects everyone.

“It’s just really ignorant you know,” Valarie Flores, a Roswell citizen, said. “I hope his parents or her parents have a talk with him and just explain you know, fun and games, you could be hurting a lot of people.”

Other incidents like this have turned out to be hoaxes or pranks. A waitress with Anita’s New Mexico Cafe alleged that a white man refused to tip her and wrote “Great service. Don’t tip black people” on his receipt.(RELATED:Lawyer: Racist Note Given To Black Waitress In Virginia Is A Fake)

A lawyer for the man denied the story, saying he refused to tip her because she gave poor service.

“Our client has no ill feelings towards African Americans. Our client did not leave a $0.00 tip. Our client tipped $0.01 out of his own conviction against tipping well for poor service,” the lawyer said.

Roswell High School officials did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
