A majority of Democrats find it stressful to talk with supporters of President Donald Trump, according to a Pew Research Center poll released Thursday.
The latest national survey by Pew, conducted June 27 through July 9 among 2,505 adults, found that 68 percent of both Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents find it “stressful and frustrating” to talk about politics with people who have a different opinion of Trump. Just 28 percent of the two groups found it “interesting and informative.”
Republicans in the same poll were more split on the question. Only 52 percent of Republicans or Republican-leaning independents said that it’s stressful to talk about politics with people who have a different opinion of the president. Forty-two percent found it interesting and informative.
The poll found that white Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are more likely to find it stressful to talk with Trump supporters than did black or Hispanic Democrats. While 74 percent of white Democrats say it is stressful, only 56 percent of blacks and 61 percent of Hispanic Democrats shared the same opinion.
Women find talking with people with a different view of Trump more frustrating than men, 64 percent compared to 54 percent. Adults under 30 are actually more likely to find conversations with people of the opposite political persuasion interesting than are older Americans, 42 percent to 33 percent.
