New York Times op-ed writer Lindy West wrote an article Wednesday describing abortion as the ultimate symbol of freedom and rebirth of women.
West said in her article, “Of Course Abortion Should Be a Litmus Test for Democrats,” that Democrats need to rally behind abortion rights to make the party stronger, and she condemned any Democrats that might not support abortion.
“To legislatively oppose abortion is to be, at best, indifferent to the disenfranchisement, suffering and possibly even the death of women. Anti-abortion Democrats include Sens. Bob Casey, Joe Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, and Tim Kaine.
Included in the list of claims West made about abortion were the following:
- “To be anti-choice on a policy level is absolutely indefensible from an economic justice, racial justice, gender justice and human rights standpoint.”
- “Abortion is not a fringe issue. Abortion is liberty.”
- “There is no economic equality without the ability to terminate a pregnancy.”
- “Abortion is normal. Abortion is common…”
- “Abortion is not controversial on the left…”
West also did not withhold criticism of President Donald Trump in her article. “Nineteen hyenas and a broken vacuum cleaner control the White House,” she wrote. “I am desperate and afraid.”
She ended her article by pointing to the abortion issue as a mechanism by which the Democratic Party can coalesce into a powerful driving force.
“Come on, Democrats. Be something. Unite and move left. The center will follow or lose,” West wrote.
