Baltimore activists’ bid over the weekend to convince fellow citizens to stop killing each other lasted for about 24 hours before someone was fatally shot.
Two men were fatally shot Saturday — one man died around 5 p.m., while another man died from a gunshot wound later Saturday night, reports NBC News. Both were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The two homicides come during the same weekend Baltimore activists planned their “Nobody Kill Anybody” event, a collective effort aimed at trying to crack down on the city’s rising homicide count. Activists called on residents to stop shooting each other between Friday to Sunday.
Organizer Erricka Bridgeford went on Facebook to urge people to still adhere to the ceasefire after the homicides, even though it had already been broken.
“If you are going to run around here acting defeated, A. Part of me wants to give you this nub to your eye, and then, to hug you, and B. You are not ready for this revolution. It’s fine. But please sit down & quiet yourself. Stop panicking out loud. Find a corner & watch us keep GETTING THIS WORK,” Bridgeford posted Sunday morning.
Baltimore has been struggling with a rising homicide rate for this past year. Already, the city has recorded 204 homicides for 2017.
T.J Smith, the Baltimore Police Department spokesperson, tweeted out a message of support for the event in light of the two homicides.
“Yes, there was a homicide. But,the work doesn’t stop,” Smith wrote Saturday. “Organizers called and are in the area to continue to spread love.”
