On August 7, 1782, George Washington created the Badge for Military Merit, which was given to Revolutionary War heroes who demonstrated extraordinary valor in battle. The Badge for Military Merit was in the shape of a purple heart, and when the award was revived in the 20th century, it became known as the Purple Heart.

Today, we remember August 7 as “Purple Heart Day,” when we honor those who were wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. On this day, you should take the time to thank those who risked their lives for your freedom. Another way to thank veterans is with Purple Heart Red Wine, a wine that is made by veterans and benefits the unmet needs of veterans.
