Jim Carrey is making his return to television after a long 20-year hiatus from the small screen.

The 55-year-old comedian is going to be the star of Showtime’s upcoming series called “Kidding,” and it sounds like the part is perfect for him, so says Showtime president David Nevins.

“No one inhabits a character like Jim Carrey, and this role–which is like watching Humpty Dumpty after the fall–is going to leave television audiences wondering how they went so long without him,” Nevins said.

Carrey recently threw his fans for a loop in an interview with E! News last week during which he made close to no sense at all. If that bizarre exchange had you worried, this news from Nevins should reassure you that the “Dumb And Dumber” star is still himself.

But if you need anymore convincing to watch his new show, here’s what it’s all about:

“Carrey plays Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – who also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister, and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.”

Carrey is teaming up with director Michel Gondry, who he worked with on the Oscar-winning “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” which Nevins believes will be a hit combo once again.

“With his ‘Eternal Sunshine’ partner Michel Gondry on board to direct, we are on our way to a magnetic, volcanic and emotional viewing experience.”

The half-hour comedy series will be Carrey’s first television job since “In Living Color” 20 years back.
