Hollywood is applauding the fact Pakistani Londoner Riz Ahmed won an award at the Emmy Awards Sunday night, but the actor says one prize won’t solve racism.
“I don’t know if any one person’s win of an award or one person snagging one role or one person doing very well changes something that’s a systemic issue of inclusion,” the star actor of “The Night Of” series told the press after his win, according to the Huffington Post. “I think that’s something that happens slowly over time.”
“If there are enough isolated examples of success, then maybe the dots start joining up and it’s not as slow a process as it sometimes is,” he told reporters. Ahmed is the first man of South Asian decent to win the award.
Some minority actors, including Ahmed, gathered together for a picture after the awards show concluded.
“For a lot of actors of color, you often have more opportunities in the U.S.” Ahmed said. “Hopefully we’re going to see a globalization of our storytelling and a globalization of the talent pool that we draw from,” he added.
“Geeks of Color” also put together a compilation of minorities winning Emmys.
