I don’t know anything about Dan Helmer, except that he’s a Virginia Democrat running for Congress and he’s a veteran of the U.S. Army. I respect his service to our country, and I wish him no ill will as he seeks to challenge Republican Barbara Comstock. But this campaign ad he just put out is the most baffling thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen mother!.
Get ready to cringe very, very hard:
This is like The Room of political ads. By which I mean: As much as it makes me shudder, as amazingly bad as it is in every way, I think people are going to grudgingly respect this guy’s fearlessness. I’m not sure about his judgment, but I can’t deny his courage. It takes balls to make a fool of yourself this completely.
I have no idea if Helmer has a chance, and of course the Democrats are now a fringe party and I hope they never win another election as long as I live. But he’s living his best life, and I salute him for that.
Although the next time I see him, I’m gonna hit the mute button.
