In a real-life home alone scenario, a mother was arrested after leaving her four young children unsupervised while jetting off on a 12-day vacation to Germany, police reported Friday.

Erin Macke, 30, allegedly tried to hire a babysitter watch the children, but the arrangements fell through for unspecified reasons. Instead of cancelling her trip, the mother left her two 12-year-olds in charge of her other 7- and 6-year-old children.

Macke has been charged with four counts of child endangerment and one of transferring a firearm to a child under 21, the Associated Press reported. This fourth charge was filed after police found out that she left a gun in the home that was accessible to the children. While Macke originally planned on returning Sunday from her 12-day vacation, police demanded that she fly back to the U.S. Thursday so she could be placed in custody.

Police were originally called to the residence Sept. 21 following a report that the children were left unsupervised, the New York Post reported.

“They were concerned, they didn’t know, they were confused,” Lt. Tyler Tompkins said. “I mean, we’re only talking about 12-year-olds being the adults here.”

The children were held in custody by the Iowa Human Services Department and have now been released to relatives.
