GOP Rep. Trent Frank of Arizona wrote an editorial Wednesday urging the Senate to pass the 20-week abortion bill to fulfill a “promise to the American people” that elected President Donald Trump.

“In order to help Trump fulfill this promise to the American people and the pro-life community that elected him, Senate Republicans must put aside their self-serving 60 vote Motion to Proceed rule and do what it takes to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Children Protection Act,” Frank wrote Wednesday in an op-ed for Fox News.

Frank’s piece comes after the House passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Protection Act 237-189 Tuesday evening. The legislation calls for not aborting unborn babies past 20 weeks gestation, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. If the law passes, abortion providers that violate the law will be penalized and could be sentenced to five years in prison. (Related: House Passes Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act).

Frank urged the Senate to vote straight on this bill because it’s clear that Trump’s supporters are pro-life. “Trump’s pro-life commitments made the critical difference in his election,” wrote Frank.

“American voters agree – no pain capable baby should have to undergo agonizing dismemberment in an elective late term abortion,” Frank wrote. He also took a stab at Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who he wrote “has stunningly allowed Democrats to use arcane Senate rules to gridlock this incredibly reasonable pro-life bill.” (Related: Only Three Democrats Voted For The 20-Week Abortion Ban).

McConnell must ensure a fair vote on the bill, Frank insisted. “To do less is to allow this insidious and unthinkable carnage to continue, and to betray the very most essential hope the Party of Lincoln represents to America – and the very most helpless among us,” he wrote.
