A Michigan mom used religious claims to refuse to vaccinate her son, sending her to jail Wednesday.
Rebecca Bedrow, 40, repeatedly refused to vaccinate her nine-year-old son, landing her in jail for a week reported the New York Post. The decision follows a year-long court battle after her ex-husband James Horne brought the battle to court. The judge ordered Bedrow to vaccinate her son within a week, which she ignored.
“I couldn’t bring myself to do it,” said Bedrow in court. She justified her actions on the basis of religious beliefs. However, her ex-husband’s lawyer says that that is a “phony” claim and that neither parents practiced an organized religion.
Besides religious justifications, certain parents believe that vaccines can cause autism, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Institute of Medicine have debunked that myth. Doctors believe that the rise in certain diseases, such as whooping cough and measles, is due to the anti-vaccination movement, reported the Detroit Free Press.
