President Donald Trump decried the “horrific shooting” that left over two dozen people dead at a church in Texas.
A gunman — 26-year-old Devin P. Kelley — strolled into First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas Sunday and opened fire, killing and injuring many members of the local congregation. “This act of evil occurred as the victims and their families were in their place of worship,” Trump said at a business meeting in Japan. “Our hearts are broken.”
“We pull together, we join arms … through the tears and the sadness we stand strong,” the president, who is currently on a two-week trip across Asia, added.
He stressed that the local authorities in Texas have the full support of the federal government, adding, “I will continue to follow the developments closely. All of America is praying to God to help the wounded and the families of the victims.” The victims ages ranged from five to 72 years old.
The gunman, clad in a mask and tactical gear, reportedly used a semi-automatic rifle to unload “clip after clip” into the churchgoers. A local resident engaged the shooter, causing him to flee the scene. Kelley was found dead behind the wheel of his car about ten miles from the church.
