Billionaire Tom Steyer thrashed Republican officials Friday for releasing a document that could seriously damage his months-long campaign to impeach President Donald Trump.
“Leadership of the GOP has sunk to a new low,” Steyer said in a press statement addressing a highly-touted memo Republicans believe hurts the investigation into Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election.
The memo distorts facts to allege wrongdoing by FBI Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the FBI, and the Department of Justice, Steyer added. Republicans believe elements within the FBI used a disputed dossier to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant against officials that allegedly colluded with Russia to help elect President Donald Trump.
The four-page memo, which was written by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, asserts that the FBI used the dubious dossier to obtain a warrant to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. Other Trump campaign associates were also spied on during the campaign.
Steyer, a billionaire former hedge fund manager and liberal financier, used various social media platforms to launch the Need to Impeach movement in October 2017. More than 4 million people have signed the petition so far, but House Democrats are not enamored with the move.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called an impeachment campaign impractical last year, and suggested it distracts from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and could jeopardize Democratic efforts to take back Congress in 2018.
Steyer, who supported former Secretary for State Hillary Clinton’s presidential run, backs the Mueller investigation but thinks there is an “open and shut case that [Trump] has met the criteria for impeachment.” He has yet to produce evidence supporting his position.
