Danica Patrick’s career as a NASCAR driver ended after wrecking her car at the Daytona 500 Sunday.

It had been known for a while that Patrick was stepping away from the racing league. I don’t think anybody, however, expected it to end in a crash.

Patrick posted several photos of herself at the Daytona 500 after the race to commemorate her career, and left it with the simple statement, “Goodbye race track, until May. Thank you for the memories Nascar and Daytona.”

Patrick’s racing career didn’t turn out how many were expecting or hoping. She never got the major wins that she was looking for or have any real sustained level of success.

There’s much more to the story than just results. She broke through into racing as a trailblazer for women everywhere. That’s not a bad legacy to have at all.

She also was the face of the multi-billion dollar company Go Daddy.

She might not have reached the top of the racing world, but she left a footprint behind that I don’t think anybody will forget anytime soon.
