The Parkland shooting massacre could have been far more deadly because the shooter paused his attack because his gun jammed, according to a Tuesday report.

An official with knowledge of the investigation into the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School revealed that alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz stopped his attack because he couldn’t change his magazines, according to CBS Miami.

Cruz, who reportedly planned to shoot at students from the third floor stairwell, had his gun jam as he tried to change magazines, three sources told CBS Miami. At this point, Cruz stopped his attack because police officers were responding. He ran out of the building and blended with other students.

Cruz’s gun still possessed 150 ammunition rounds, according to the sources.

Cruz’s attack left 17 faculty and students dead and countless others injured. The FBI admitted that they did not follow protocol by properly reporting a tip to its Miami filed office that deemed Cruz a threat.
