A new report claims President Trump ignored his own advisers and congratulated Russian leader Vladimir Putin for winning re-election, despite being explicitly told not to.
The Washington Post reports that Trump ignored “a section in his briefing materials in all-capital letters stating ‘DO NOT CONGRATULATE,’ according to officials familiar with the call.”
The Post also reports that Trump did not follow the advice to condemn Putin for the poisoning of a former Russian spy in the U.K.
Trump has faced widespread attacks from many in the media for congratulating Putin on his election win. Critics of the president say that it is inappropriate for Trump to do so considering that Russian elections are not fair. (RELATED: Media Freakout After Trump Congratulates Putin)
Even some Republicans criticized the congratulatory call. Sen. John McCain tweeted Tuesday:
An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections. And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election. https://t.co/lcQTBi7CA1
