CNN commentator Tara Setmayer suggested on Tuesday night that black Republicans deserve to be called “Uncle Toms” or “coons” if they “act like it.”

During a debate on the Republican Party’s recruitment of minorities, Christopher Harris argued that it is really hard for black people to admit that they are Republicans because they will be called racial slurs by the left.

“It takes somebody with very thick skin to go out there and be black and say, ‘I’m a Republican,” Harris said. “Because, what’s going to happen is they’re going to come on your network…and they’re going to be called everything but a child of God. They’re going to be called an Uncle Tom, a coon, and everything like that.”

CNN’s Symone Sanders and Tara Setmayer groaned at Harris’ assertion.

“Well, if you act like it and someone calls you out on it then we can’t do anything about that!” Setmayer declared. “Maybe the messenger needs to be better.”

“So it’s okay to actually call someone a particular name as long as you feel like they’re acting like that?” Harris said incredulously.

“I’m just saying that you can’t blame people for being called certain names if they behave a certain way,” Setmayer responded.
