Authorities recently busted an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection after the man passed out in his truck with several grams of heroin.

Police arrested agent Brandon Herrera Sunday in Oceanside, Calif., after following up on a suspicious persons report at an apartment complex on Los Arbolitos Boulevard. The initial complaint was made April 2, however, authorities were unable to locate the veichle in question until Sunday, reports NBC San Diego.

Herrera was sleeping or passed out in his truck when police arrived on scene. During a subsequent search of the vehicle officers found a rifle and five grams of heroin, which officials called “more than just a dusting.”

Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection placed Herrera on administrative leave while Oceanside police continue their investigation into the incident.

Drug overdoses, fueled by substances like heroin and fentanyl, are now the leading cause of accidental death for Americans under age 50, killing more than 64,000 people in 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse released on Sept. 7 paints a grim outlook for the future of the drug crisis ravaging American communities.

The study predicts America’s addiction epidemic will continue to deteriorate, pushing drug deaths to an estimated 71,600 in 2017. If the estimates prove accurate, 2017 will be the second year in a row drug deaths surpass U.S. casualties in the Vietnam War.
