Democratic Congressman Jim Himes of Connecticut became infuriated on CNN’s “At This Hour” Friday and said critics of Robert Mueller and James Comey will “rot in hell.”
Democrats were constantly changing their opinion of Comey, and Republicans were seizing on that uncertainty, host Kate Bolduan said.
“Democrats, lawyers, judges, were very concerned by Comey’s breaking of protocol and publicly discussing the Hillary Clinton — and remember it was the Hillary Clinton investigation that he discussed while there was an investigation of Donald Trump,” Himes replied.
“So, we should have a conversation, and I think Jim Comey is reflective about whether he made the right thing. But the idea that this man is dishonest, and remember, this is all part and parcel of the attempt that the White House is making to besmirch Robert Mueller, a decorated war hero. That’s what is happening here,” Himes added. “People will rot in hell for besmirching the reputation of these two men.”
Bouldan sensed Himes’ frustration and asked why he was so angry.
“You do not get to take men like Bob Mueller and Jim Comey who have done nothing but try to serve this country and the most extraordinary circumstances and using the apparatus of the White House, most powerful office in the land, and the Republican, the Republican National Committee, the party of Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to trash the integrity of a good man,” Himes added.
“That’s when you step over; that’s when this country starts coming apart,” he said.
“When it is okay for the president and the White House and the storied Republican Party, I’m a Democrat; but you know what, I’m enormously proud of what the Republican Party used to be. When those tools get used to trash the integrity of two good men, this country’s gone over a cliff,” he concluded.
Himes sent out an email to political field organizers in his home state of Connecticut Friday, predicting President Donald Trump will fire Mueller in the next 48 hours. The e-mail, authored by Himes himself, was leaked to The Daily Caller News Foundation and shows Democrats preparing to launch a mass protest in response to any moves Trump might make.
“Constitutional order and rule of law are at stake,” Himes wrote. “As a consequence, it is important that we speak and act in a coordinated manner.”
