President Donald Trump made his expectations for North Korea unmistakably clear at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron Tuesday afternoon.

I want them to get rid of their nukes,” the president replied when asked what denuclearization means to the Trump administration. “It means they get rid of their nukes. Nobody else would say it. They get rid of their nukes. Very simple. It would be easy to make a simple deal and declare victory. I want them to get rid of their nukes.”

Trump is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in May or June, and the president, making his decisions based on reports from U.S. and foreign officials who have met with Kim that North Korea is open to denuclearization, is demanding the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim recently announced that he is suspending weapons testing and closing the Punggye-ri Nuclear Testing Site, but Korea watchers believe Kim will not forfeit his nuclear arsenal. The president has stated that he may walk out of talks with Kim if negotiations are unproductive and fail to yield fruit.

“The end result is we’ll see. Maybe good things will happen and maybe we’re all wasting a lot of time,” Trump said during Tuesday’s afternoon’s joint press conference.
