An interview with Bill Clinton went viral this week when he refused to apologize to Monica Lewinsky for the fallout over their affair.

NBC’s Craig Melvin asked Clinton in the interview, “Do you feel like you owe her an apology?”

Clinton said, “No, I do — I do not. I’ve never talked to her.” In the NBC interview, Clinton also said he did not get out of the affair “for free,” claiming that he was badly in debt after leaving office with a damaged reputation.

Clinton joined Stephen Colbert on CBS’ “The Tonight Show” Tuesday to try a do-over. Colbert said it looked like Clinton did not “enjoy” his last interview and “I want you to enjoy this one.” Colbert went on to ask Clinton, “Would you like a do over on that answer?” and if he could “reflect” on his behavior.

Clinton claimed he was a victim of selective editing by NBC. “They had to distill it,” he said, claiming that the network ultimately edited the interview to make it look like he did not want to apologize.

“I was mad at me” Clinton said, claiming that it was not his “finest hour.” The former president went on to say of the affair with the 22-year-old intern, “that was a very painful thing that happened” before noting that he did ultimately apologize.
