Host of CNN’s “New Day” John Berman tried taking the moral high ground against President Donald Trump Monday and said his campaign’s meeting with Russian officials may have crossed a line.

Berman was referring to the news of a meeting between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to discuss possible opposition research against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. (RELATED: Karl Rove Says Trump’s War On The Media Is Not Working)

“It’s up for interpretation right now. We do not know, I think, how a court would decide this,” Berman said. “But to suggest it’s totally legal, which is what the president said, not quite true at this point. Based on our understanding of it. We don’t know.”

Berman suggested Trump and his attorney Jay Sekulow are being dishonest with the American people and brought up the possible moral implications of the Trump Tower meeting.

“Also what Jay Sekulow said, ‘I don’t know if any laws were violated or what law would be violated.’ That’s not really true either,” Berman continued.

“Beyond the law, there is the politics of this and also just the morality of it,” he concluded. “President Trump now says something flat out, he says the meeting that Donald, that meeting that Donald had in Trump Tower, this was a meeting to get information on an opponent … this is admitting in a way that his statement he dictated was misleading.”
