“So far, I’ve been very very saddened that he doesn’t seem like Albert Einstein,” Trump said of then-Texas Governor and presidential candidate George W. Bush.
Trump’s interview came during a time when he was challenging Bush as a candidate for president on the Reform Party ticket in 1999.
Trump has long had a very low regard for his predecessor, frequently deriding him throughout the 2016 presidential campaign and during his presidency. The president in particular continually knocks Bush for his decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and the subsequent fallout in the Middle East.
