Graham told CNN on Wednesday that he received a surprise phone call from the president — who had a tumultuous relationship with McCain — immediately after the speech.

“When [Trump] says something bad about John it pisses me off,” Graham admitted, but added, “He called yesterday after my speech and he couldn’t have been nicer.”

“He said, ‘That was very sad. I just wanted to let you know that you did right by your friend,'” Graham shared. “I said, ‘Thank you, Mr. President.'”

“Right out of the blue,” Graham said of the call.
