Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii has vocally opposed Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court since day one, however, she has recently seized upon the allegation of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh while ignoring allegations regarding a high-ranking member of her own party.

CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Hirono on Sunday if Democrats would be more credible when it comes to allegations of sexual assault if they took the same allegations as seriously such as those against Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

“I’ve been very clear that I’ve made no excuses for anybody who engages in this kind of behavior,” Hirono said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “And as far as Keith Ellison, these allegations need to be investigated and appropriate action taken.”

Ellison has defended himself against allegations of sexual abuse from two separate accusers, contending that both women fabricated their stories. One of the reported victims has medical documentation and corroborating evidence to back up her claims. Regardless, Democrats, have maintained their support for Ellison.

However, the Hawaii senator quickly shifted the focus back to Kavanaugh. (RELATED: Mazie Hirono Tells Men To ‘Shut Up And Step Up’)

“Meanwhile, we have within the next week or so we have before us a nominee that is under a cloud,” Hirono continued. “There’s not even a modicum of investigation, and so we are left with basically he said she said. This happens a lot in the context of sexual assault, we know this.”

“I want to be very laser focused on the fact that this person, who already has credibility issues,” Hirono said.
